Assessment

At the ASD Clinic we provide initial assessments in order to evaluate the specific difficulties the patient is experiencing and to determine how our treatment services may be able to help.

At the ASD clinic we have a range of health care professionals who can assess each patient's specific areas of difficulty. We can provide assessment in:

Our therapists will carry out an initial assessment which will determine what areas the individual is having difficulty in, the type of difficulties they are having and the severity of their difficulties.

We offer a range of assessments which will be chosen to suit the specific abilities of the patient. Assessment may include either formal or informal assessment.

Formal assessments

Formal assessments are assessments which compare the individual's difficulties and abilities to the rest of the typically developing population. Formal assessments can provide standardised and age-equivalent scores which can help the therapist to determine how severe the patient's difficulties are.

Informal assessments

Informal assessments are tailor made by the therapist to suit the individual's specific needs and abilities. Informal assessments do not provide standardised scores, however they are beneficial in assessing patients who may find formal assessments difficult to carry out.

An initial assessment at the ASD clinic will usually involve:

  • A discussion with the patient and their parent or carer regarding the difficulties they are experiencing and any concerns they may have.
  • A detailed case history including; medical, developmental and family history.
  • A general observation of the patient's abilities.
  • Specific assessments which will evaluate the individual's specific difficulties. Assessments may include both informal and formal assessments.
  • A discussion about the assessment results and what treatment plan will be appropriate for the patient.

Assessments provide the therapist with a detailed overview of the difficulties the patient is experiencing and will help to determine what treatment options will be beneficial for the patient. Treatment options may include individual therapy, group therapy, advice and support or discharge.

Assessments can be administered on a regular basis throughout therapy in order to review the patient's progress in therapy.
