- Why Us?
Due to the range of symptoms seen in Pervasive Developmental Disorders, speech and language therapy treatment will vary greatly. Speech and language therapy will be tailored to the specific needs and abilities of the individual with Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
Speech and language therapy aims to support, develop and improve any speech, language, communication or swallowing difficulties an individual with Pervasive developmental Disorder may have.
An initial assessment carried out by the speech and language therapist will determine the type and severity of difficulties the individual has with their speech, language, communication and swallowing. Following an initial assessment, a discussion with the patient and / their parent or carer, the speech and language therapist will devise an appropriate treatment plan which will be tailored to the individuals needs and abilities.
Due to the nature of Pervasive Developmental Disorders and the range of difficulties experienced in speech, language, communication and swallowing the type of treatment given will vary amongst individuals.
Speech and language therapy will focus on improving and supporting the following areas of difficulty:
- Expressive language (verbal and written)
- Receptive language (understanding)
- Social communication and interaction
- Attention and listening
- Play skills
- Eating, drinking and swallowing
- Speech
The speech and language therapist will work on the above areas using a variety of techniques, strategies and therapy programmes. The speech and language therapist will also provide training for parents / carers on how to best support the individual's communication.
In more severe cases where an individual has very limited speech or no speech at all, the speech and language therapist will explore different ways of communicating; this is known as Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). AAC is any form of communication other than speech and includes use of pictures, symbols, sign language and electronic aids as forms of communication.
Speech and language therapy is a key intervention for individuals with Pervasive Developmental disorder and supports and treats the main difficulties seen as part of the disorder. Speech and language therapy aims to maximise the individual's communication to their highest potential across their educational, home and social environments.
Speech and language therapists work closely with a range of professionals' e.g. educational staff and also the patient's carers / families in ensuring the patient achieves the best possible outcome from therapy.
